PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

AIAS for SANKOFA

UPDATE:$5,000 GOAL MET!

A Message From Penn State University's Stuckeman Architecture School

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Penn State Chapter is fundraising for the Homewood neighborhood's Sankofa Village Community Garden in Pittsburgh, PA.

In the Spring of 2020,  twenty-six 4th year students of the Stuckeman Architecture School at Penn State spent their semester designing a theoretical community center for the Sankofa Village Community Garden/Farms. This garden is located in Homewood, PA which is a predominately black neighborhood next to Pittsburgh. SVCG's mission is to teach children in their community how to grow their own produce, become food entrepreneurs, and acquire healthy lifestyles in the current food desert that is Homewood.

The class spent its time researching the demographics of Homewood and the history of the community, as well as, met with the CEO of the organization, Ms. Vikki Ayanna Jones. By the end of the project, the class became educated on the importance of inspirational architectural spaces for an up-and-coming community. They realized it became essential to design uplifting and positive spaces to bring this community together. While these designs are theoretical, the AIAS chapter at Penn State strives to get involved in real life and support the Sankofa Village Community Garden.

Please consider donating to this organization in the fight against food apartheid in low-income communities. Visit www.svcgpgh.com to read more about SVCG and watch videos to become better educated on the food apartheid crisis. Please click here to view the GoFundMe Page.

Thank you for participating in this fundraiser for the Sankofa Village Community Garden. We are truly thankful!
